Understanding Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenenomics - they are the link between diet and genes. In particular, nutrigenetics is the science that studies genetic variants associated with differential response to nutrients, while nutrigenomics is a whole system approach that investigates how nutrients can affect gene expression. Other factors such as lifestyle and exercise, can also affect gene expression.
Everything you eat can have an effect on your genes. Our genes cannot be changed, but you can change how well they function by making the right dietary choices. This means that, if you know your genes, you can make better informed decisions to maximise your health than if you only receive generic dietary advice.
Nutrition and lifestyle intervention based on your genetics may assist with a range of health concerns, including:
- Obesity and pre-diabetes
- Diabetes and insulin resistance
- Fat metabolism and weight management
- Hypertension
- Bone health
- Hormone regulation and menopause balance
- Irregular sleep patterns
- Relief from joint pain
- Vitamin D absorption: and more
- Dietary intolerances and sensitivities
- Cardiovascular health and cholesterol regulation
- General health and wellbeing
- Healthy ageing
Lifestyle Medicine Clinic approach towards optimal health and wellness begins with recommending our clients to undertake a DNA genetic profile in order to establish their nutrigenetic predisposition.
Lifestyle Medicine Clinic offers the following Fitgenes products that can assist you in making more informed decisions around lifestyle choices, nutrition and exercise:

Determine your unique genetic make-up with a personalised genetic profile called Fitgenes Health and Wellbeing Panel followed by a 12 week treatment plan to address your healthcare needs.
The treatment plan focuses solely on improving your health, nutrition and fitness through the use of targeted proactive health interventions.
Any advice or suggested interventions recommended relate specifically to enhancing your personal health and wellbeing, and not for the identification of any disease and/or prescribing any medically-based interventions or procedures.
If you have any pre-existing medical conditions please inform your Lifestyle Medicine practitioner/Fitgenes practitioner before undertaking this test.
This test analyses a select range of genes (64 genes) that are key influences of your good health, wellbeing and performance.
The information made available in your Fitgenes Genetic Profile is designed to empower you towards making more informed decisions regarding your lifestyle, health, nutrition, and fitness.
Fitgenes test focuses on genes that we can modify - genes that enhance health and function we want to "turn up", e.g. antioxidant genes that produce our beneficial antioxidant enzymes and genes that negatively impact on our health and function that we want to "turn down", e.g. inflammatory genes that produce inflammatory cytokines that cause damage.
After receiving the test results and coupled with your functional pathology tests, your Lifestyle Medicine Practitioner interprets the results and prepares a personalised interventions treatment plan that includes lifestyle recommendations, nutritional advice, exercise recommendations and supplementation to achieve your desired health goals.
Please note that the genetic test cost is payable directly to the Fitgenes laboratory for performing your DNA analysis. Also please note that the results interpretation consultation and treatment plan consultations will be charged separately at our standard rates.
While is not cheap, this one-time only genetic test will certainly change the way you do things in your life.

Step 2
You provide a DNA sample via a non-invasive buccal (inside your cheeks) swab. The swab is sent to the laboratory for testing of the genes outlined, that is those which influence health and wellbeing.
Step 3
We receive your genetic profile report and with the help of our professional knowledge, tools and processes we interpret your results and prepare a customised treatment plan.
CarbChoice is a Fitgenes personalised genetic profile report of the AMY1 gene CNV, which determines how effectively you metabolise starch (the most common carbohydrate included in human diet) from carbohydrates.
Scientific studies have shown that variations in the human salivary amylase gene (AMY1) influence how well your body can breakdown and process starch, meaning that some people can tolerate these carbohydrates better than others.
Benefits:
This report provides information needed to prepare a personalised and targeted nutrition, exercise and lifestyle intervention program to support your unique requirements for carbohydrate and starch consumption.
What clients will learn from their report and intervention plan:
- Genetic predisposition around how effectively they process starch in carbohydrates
- How much starch carbohydrate to consume
- Foods to include as part of everyday diet and nutrition to support optimal starch carbohydrate processing
- Foods to avoid or minimise to support unique needs
- Foods to increase amylase levels to support better starch carbohydrate processing
- Lifestyle guidance for optimising amylase levels
- Practitioner support to prepare an intervention plan to support results
Your genes play an important role in how your body responds to common dietary ingredients, such as gluten, lactose, alcohol, caffeine, and salt, as these can often cause adverse reactions and affect people differently.
Details are given on your specific genetic variants that can influence your body response to what you ingest- ranging from coeliac disease risk(gluten) and dietary intolerances (lactose and alcohol) to individual sensitivities to common ingredients (caffeine and salt)- with personalised interventions and supplementary dietary interventions.
Benefits:
This is a personalised genetic report that aims to identify some of the foods and beverages choices that you should avoid in order to prevent diet-related health issues and promote wellness.
What clients will learn from their report and intervention plan:
- If they are predisposed to have coeliac disease, or if they do not have any risk at all
- If they are likely to be/become lactose or alcohol intolerant
- If they are likely to experience caffeine or salt sensitivity
